MONTY PYTHON - THE DEAD PARROT SKETCH

Too difficult? Follow the link and read the script:

The Dead Parrot Sketch - the tapescript

Now watch the sketch again. Think about the following questions:

How many words and expressions for 'dead' does the customer use?

Which excuses does the shop assistant use for the parrot's 'condition'?

The customer wrote the following letter to the owner of the shop:

Dear Mr Brown,

Following our telephone conversation, I am writing to complain about the parrot I bought in your shop on 19th April 2008.

When I bought the parrot, the shop assistant assured me that its lack of movement was the result of its being tired following a prolongued squawk. I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home and I discovered that the parrot was dead and that the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been nailed there.

When I returned to the pet shop, the shop assistant was very unhelpful and insisted that the parrot was alive and well. Finally, after a long argument, I managed to convince him to replace the parrot. Then he said that the shop had run out of parrots and offered to give me a slug instead. As a slug can not be a replacement for a rather expensive parrot, I naturally refused.

I need hardly point out that I am extremely dissatisfied with the service you provided. I feel the way my problem has been dealt with has been absolutely appaling, and that I am entitled not only to an apology, but also a replacement Norwegian blue parrot. I would ask you to give this matter your full attention and expect to hear from you by the end of the week.

Yours Sincerely

John Cheese
